In Middle School English/Language Arts we strive to teach and enhance reading and writing skills, practice critical thinking, and clear and creative expression of ideas and reflections. We reinforce our school mission to create and develop Eager Minds, Passionate Hearts, Enthusiastic Spirit, and Brilliant Futures, while fostering growth and self-awareness through texts, writing reflections, and discussion. Essays, responding to text, and improved writing are part of our daily curriculum as we push students to discover their own competent and confident writer- skills they will use the rest of their life.
Each grade will use a text book with a wonderful compilation of short stories, articles, essays, and poems; they will have reading teams, weekly papers for creative writing and critical thinking, and many chances to continue to improve all aspects of their writing. Each grade will read three novels in addition to other grade specific projects and they will have essays, papers, discussions, and reflections on each of the texts. There will be daily vocabulary, root words, and literary elements to incorporate into their language for each grade level. Sixth Grade will get their feet wet with higher demands of critical thinking and a lot more writing, Seventh Grade will do a research paper and project during the spring: Night of the Notables, and Eighth Grade will have high expectations as we prepare them for the demands of high school and college.
