Eighth Grade
Eighth grade is an exciting year as our students embrace being leaders of our school through many opportunities including as Family Group leaders, readers of the daily morning announcements, and assisting in classrooms for service work within their school day.
RELIGION
The eighth grade students study the Old Testament and work through homily reflections weekly. They are tasked with an Arrupe project of discerning where they can spread the Good News through service. Students spend the year learning about a chosen service partner and completing independent service for them as they live out Catholic social justice teachings. At the end of the year, the students give presentations on their Arrupe project at our school's Academic Fair for parents and classmates of all grade levels.
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA)
English is a combination of the study of grammar and its application in writing. The eighth graders participate in novel studies of classic texts including Shakespeare. The eighth graders hone their essay writing skills throughout the year.
MATH
Each begins the year with a math assessment to determine student math needs. An advanced math group, with Ms. Hurtado as their teacher, completes Algebra in 8th grade. The second group works through the regular eighth grade math material studying pre-algebra.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Welcome to eighth grade social studies!
In eighth grade students will explore the history of North American and the founding of the United States up until the Civil War. The goal for students in eighth grade is to become historical detectives. Students will analyze primary source documents and explore various points of view to learn a more complex and complete history. Students examine tribal sovereignty and what it means to be a nation within a nation. In eighth grade students learn the structures of state and federal government.
Students read and discuss current news through Jr. Scholastic magazines. The eighth graders will work independently and practice collaboration in small groups. Over the course of a school year students will annotate and label timelines, label historical and current maps, analyze primary source documents, write historical narratives from a variety of perspectives, and apply essential questions to each time period. Students will participate in historical simulations, mock trials, and Socratic seminars.
SCIENCE
Unlock the wonders of the physical world with our 8th grade physical science curriculum! Designed to ignite curiosity and foster understanding, this course covers a broad spectrum of topics that will equip students with the fundamentals of physical science, paving the way for advanced studies in the future. It's not just about learning, it's about experiencing the thrill of scientific discovery.
