Pre-Kindergarten
The St. Ignatius preschool focuses on preparing students for success in PreK-8. Our classroom is a happy, busy, and hands-on learning environment. We are play-based while introducing academic skills that are developmentally appropriate for our 3- and 4-year olds. Most of all, we focus on developing kind, caring, and compassionate friendships among our students which build into a cooperative classroom spirit. Through play, exploration, and personal relationships, our preschoolers get the academic preparation they need for long-term school success.
Preschool students are integrated into the ‘big school ‘environment. They are important members of our family groups, and participate in specialist classes like P.E., music, and library – just like the big kids.
CURRICULUM FOR PRESCHOOL
RELIGION
Every day the preschoolers learn about loving each other, being kind to their friends, having a compassionate heart and helping hands, and sharing. These qualities are what Jesus inspires in all of us through the Gospel message, and it is the heart of our classroom environment. The preschoolers also participate in weekly prayer services as part of the larger school community.
MATH
Math readiness activities include recognizing colors, shapes, sizes, and patterns, as well as recognizing numerals and matching them with groups of objects, rote counting, and understanding comparative relationships such as big/little, slow/fast, etc.
LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
Storytelling is a wonderful foundation for reading readiness. Our preschool teachers inspire a joy of reading while at the same time laying a strong foundation of literacy skills. Preschool students develop skills in listening, understanding directions (one-step and multiple-step), reciting the alphabet, identifying upper case letters, and associating a letter with the sound that it makes.
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Our preschoolers learn to follow rules, routines, and to manage transitions; they participate in group activities while learning to share and take turns; and they learn the responsibility and satisfaction that come from cleaning up after playtime and projects. Our students learn to interact easily with one another, to use words to resolve frustrations, and, when needed, when to ask a teacher for help.
FINE MOTOR SKILLS
Students have ample opportunities to develop their fine motor skills, such as grasping a pencil and scissors correctly, stacking blocks and stringing beads, completing simple puzzles, drawing lines, writing their first name, as well as developing more precise cutting and gluing skills.
ART
We use a variety of art materials in preschool, encouraging students to explore an assortment of art forms, techniques, and tactile experiences.
MUSIC
Our preschool teachers integrate song and dance into their classroom activities, and students have music class with Mr. MacKenzie, our school music teacher, twice each week.
MOVEMENT / PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Dance and creative expression are part of our daily preschool experience. We have daily outdoor play on the school playground and P.E. class in the gym with Mr. Brobeck two times per week.
LIBRARY
Our preschoolers go to the library once a week for story time with Mrs. McDermott and enjoy the opportunity to explore the many children’s books available in our school library.
SERVICE LEARNING
We make decorations and collect donations for a women's shelter, Jean's Place.
